And one that depicts the Detroit of his mid-90s beginnings as a decaying, rundown, real place where anger-fuelled hip-hop sounds a natural musical response to the environment, rather than a list of social and racial problems to be ticked off along the way. Here, he verbally defends a gay guy, objects to guns, is depicted as a responsible stand-in father to his fictional little sister (more a substitute for his own real-life daughter than his actual little brother), and the strongest language he uses to his deadbeat screen mom (Kim Basinger in impressively unglamorous form) amounts to: Go get a job. And that also delivers a canny image makeover for the star. Narratively speaking, it's nowhere as clever as his best songs and the characters are comparatively conventional. Getting there, it follows a story that will be vaguely familiar to Eminem followers.
We get only scrappy snatches of Rabbit's raps along the way, which heightens the inevitable but thrilling finale. However, there's something clever in the way 8 Mile creates its own sense of expectation. In his first encounter, Rabbit freezes in front of his black opponent and the booing crowd. He's in a Detroit hip-hop club where rappers go at each other in microphone battles in scenes which are to 8 Mile what the boxing ring was to Rocky or the dancefloor to Saturday Night Fever: that possible fleeting moment of glory and transcendence. Though, it seems, they were pretty humble indeed - we first see Eminem's alter-ego (yes, another one) Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith in the scungiest toilet imaginable, vomiting with pre-performance nerves. It's really a conventional, old-fashioned, talent-will-overcome-all showbiz one at that, not just a vehicle to show an authorised version of Eminem's humble beginnings.
